Twist ‘n’ turn Aarti Kumar warns that twist therapy should be learnt from a genuine practitioner

 

 

Sometimes, the twists and turns of life render us exhausted. However, there are a few twists that work just the opposite. Actually, they are twists of wellness and health. Just like a wrong twist can wreak havoc on our bodies, the right twists have the potential to do wonders, I discovered as I tried out a few twists at Aarti’s Healing Care clinic run by Aarti Kumar in Vasant Kunj. “Thirty-five times repetition of this movement is equivalent to 4 kms of walking in the park. It also helps tremendously in weight loss,” states Aarti as I struggle with twist walking. With one hand in front, palm turned outwards and the other at the back, with palm inwards, my body till the abdomen is turned left at almost 90 degrees. I think of Indian classical dance forms or martial arts, as I attempt the twist walking.

Korean origins

 

 



 

 

As for its background, South Korean scientist and philosopher Park Jae Woo is the man behind it. In 2003, Jae went on to set up a Twist therapy institute in Moscow. Every year, Woo visits different countries and trains people in this discipline. Aarti has learnt both Su Jok and twist therapy from Woo and is a silver medallist. Twist therapy, by means of twisting various body parts, activates energy circulation in the body. There are four types of motion in the human body — linear (up and down and vice versa), circular (around hips, breasts, arms), spiral (fingertips, tip of the head, etc.) and in-place rotation. The spiral motion, also called neutro energy, is activated by twist therapy which in turn helps in recovering of vital life activities.

There are a number of twists and you can twist as many parts of your body: In and out twist (hand and leg), left and right (neck and trunk), bend and stretch (neck and back, spine and wrist), contraction and expansion (belly, neck, chest and even tongue). Also, there are some fixed twists, moving twists and natural twists. “But diagnosis is the main thing in this therapy. For specific problems, one has to do particular twists,” shares Aarti who first does birth counselling as a patient walks in.

During my birth counselling, I am told the urinary bladder, kidney and parathyroid could be problematic areas. “You would need to do some chest twists for parathyroid. Trouble in the urinary bladder can be sorted out if you walk with your foot turned outwards, for some time every day,” says Aarti. I try out the penguin walk and find it quite awkward.

 


 

 

But I am more keen to know about the twists for backache, the chronic ailment that I suffer from. Aarti demonstrates it for me and I follow. We take small steps back, with the right leg at the back and the foot turned outwards. If, I can do this 30 times a day, nothing like it, I am told. “Also, try to smile through the walk and take a deep breath after finishing it completely,” instructs Aarti.

Apart from twist walking, for general upkeep of health, finger twists can also be attempted. Arti twists all my 10 fingers both in and out for 30 seconds each. “If you are not able to do any kind of workout because of health or busy schedule and any other reason, just twists your fingers morning and evening and your body will be rejuvenated, charged, and blocked channels will open up,” promises Aarti.
